Hayward Awards for Excellence in Education Special Presentation

This item announces and recognizes the four 2003 Hayward Award for Excellence in Education recipients, representing the best of California's community college educators.
The Hayward Award for Excellence in Education program was established in 1989. Awards have been presented periodically to honor four community college faculty members who are selected by their peers for demonstrating the highest level of commitment to their students, college, and profession. Award recipients, nominated and selected by representatives of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges, must have a record of outstanding performance of professional activities, as well as a record of active participation on campus.
The 2003 Hayward Awards are supported through a grant from the Foundation for California Community Colleges, with assistance from the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges. Each recipient will receive a $1,250 cash award and a commemorative plaque.
The award is named in honor of former California Community Colleges Chancellor Gerald C. Hayward.
The 2003 award winners are:
Chuck Whitchurch of Golden West College in Huntington Beach. Whitchurch is a professor of English and Humanities. He is the coordinator of the honors program and member of the Honors Transfer Council of California. Whitchurch is committed to helping his students find the best part of themselves. He stimulates them to think critically while sharpening their sensitivity to the written word through both reading and writing. His love for the arts is apparent in his service on many art boards and through field trips with students. In an effort to assist his students to succeed, Whitchurch has created workbooks for his three honors classes. His students often praise him for these learning tools as providing tangible assistance to their learning.
Scott Lukas, Ph.D of Lake Tahoe Community College in Lake Tahoe. Lukas is a sociology and anthropology professor and serves as the department chair. He has helped advance his field by publishing multiple articles and by being an active member in six professional organizations. Lukas continues to develop new pedagogical approaches that emphasize the contributions of his students to the community such as a published article called Strategies in Teaching Anthropology, which illustrated new pedagogical techniques that he developed. Lukas also revamped the sociology and anthropology curriculum to include courses such as Visual Anthropology, Deviance, Crime and Society, Race and Ethnic Relations, September 11th, Anthropology of the Body, and Anthropology of Religion.
Barbara Austin, Ph.D, of Los Medanos College in Pittsburg. Austin is an English professor who is currently the director of the Reading and Writing Center. She played a pivotal role in designing Los Medanos College Developmental Education and Honors Programs and then applied for and received two federal Title III Institutional Grants, which total more than $4 million. By writing and managing these grants, she has helped students to persist and succeed. Austin is truly dedicated to helping her students succeed at all levels. Last year she helped more than 120 students receive a total of $340,000 in scholarships.
Ray Williams of Rio Hondo College in Whittier. Williams has been a Biology professor at Rio Hondo College for 34 years. His devotion to his profession can be seen in his many activities outside the classroom where he stays current by keeping up on developments and events related to the environment and where he participates on local and statewide boards. Williams teaches more than environmental biology. He incorporates poetry, selected writings, current events, economics, ethics, business and history as they relate to environmental conditions into his lessons. Over the years, he has watched students who hate science become science teachers.
Conclusion Four recipients of the 2002 Hayward Award for Excellence in Education will be recognized by the Board of Governors and presented plaques by the presenters listed above.
