Sculpture

From figurative ceramics to abstract stone carving, Golden West’s Golden West’s Sculpture/3D Design program will help you develop your ability to conceptualize and create three diminsional art. Students at Golden West learn to work in a variety of materials including plaster, clay, wood and stone. Our excellent facilities contain a range of tools that will help you turn your sculptural ideas into reality.

Beginning students are expected to take Three Dimensional Design, which serves as an introduction to materials and form. Intermediate students can explore life sculpture or take a general sculptural course. Experienced students can explore various approaches in Advanced Sculpture Workshop

Courses

ART G141 - 3 Units
Life Sculpture

(Formerly known as: ART 141AB)
Exploration of sculptural materials and concepts, with instruction in techniques of direct
molding, and build up techniques. Figurative source for sculpturing. Clay must be furnished
by student, purchased from GWC Bookstore. This course may be taken 2 times.
Lecture & lab. Optional pass/no pass or grade. Transferable to CSU; UC.

ART G142 - 3 Units
Sculpture

(Formerly known as: ART 142AB)
Exploration of a variety of sculptural materials--experiences with aggregate materials
(plaster, soft stone carving) and clay. Class stresses Twentieth Century abstract art
concepts. Students will supply all materials and will be responsible for attending field
trips. This course may be taken 2 times. Lecture & lab. Optional pass/no pass or grade.
Transferable to CSU; UC. (CAN ART 12)

ART G143 - 3 Units
Advanced Sculpture Workshop

(Formerly known as: ART 143AB)
Exploration of a variety of sculptural materials experiences with plaster and cement,
clay. Class stresses Twentieth Century abstract art concepts. Students will supply all
materials and will be responsible for attending field trips. This course may be taken 2
times. Lecture & lab. Optional pass/no pass or grade. Transferable to CSU; UC.

Facilities

Our facility consists of almost 2500 square feet of classroom space plus an outdoor patio area and a separate kiln area for ceramic sculpture. Our patio area contains an excellent space for stone and wood carving. The studio contains ample lockers for storage, and is stocked with a variety of power tools and finishing equipment including:
