Q: Who is eligible for the Golden Promise Program?

A: Students who meet the following criteria are eligible for Golden Promise Program:

  • First-time college student: Has not attended GWC or any other institution as a college student
  • Returning Golden Promise recipients,
  • All full time students who are not Pell Grant eligible
  • California resident: Must satisfy California residency requirements;
  • 12-unit enrollment: Enroll in 12 or more units at GWC;
  • Apply for financial aid: Complete one of the following applications. Please note, this program will cover your tuition if you do NOT qualify for the California Promise Grant (formerly known as BOG):
  • The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or
  • The California Dream Act Application

Q: If I attended Golden West College during the Summer 2019 session as a first-time student, am I eligible for Golden Promise Program for the Fall 2019 semester?

A: Yes, as long as you meet all of the eligibility criteria and the Summer 2019 was your first semester of enrollment.

Q: Will I be eligible if I am not a U.S. Citizen?

A: All GWC students who meet the program criteria and meet California residency requirements, including AB 540, are eligible regardless of their citizenship status.

Q: I already paid for my tuition, do I receive a refund?

A: For qualifying students who have already paid their tuition, a refund will apply to their account during the Fall 2019 semester. For qualifying students who have not paid their tuition, the Golden Promise Program will cover the cost for tuition.

Q: What costs are covered by the Golden Promise Program?

A: This program will cover your first year of enrollment fees for 12 or more units ($46/unit), per semester, as well as textbooks. In addition, Health Fee ($20), College Service Charge ($17), parking pass ($30) and materials fees (if applicable) as long as funds last.

Q: Do other scholarships and financial aid affect whether or not I receive free tuition?

A: If you receive a California Promise Grant or other tuition-free program, your enrollment fees will be paid through the grant or program. GWC Promise Program is an initiative designed to cover one year of tuition for full-time students who are enrolled in at 12-units who do not qualify for California College Promise Grant (Previously known as Board of Governors fee waiver, BOG)*.

GWC scholarships awarded to students outside of federal or state financial aid will not affect the receipt of Golden Promise Program free tuition. Contact the Financial Aid Office at (714) 895-8394 or for more information about the cost of attendance.

Q: Does the Golden Promise also cover summer school?

A: No, at this time, we will not be offering free tuition for the summer session.

Q: How do I enroll as a full-time student at Golden West College?

A: The first step is to apply as a college student. After your application has been processed, complete the online orientation on MyGWC and make an appointment to meet with Counselor to plan your semester. Don’t forget to apply for Financial Aid. For more information about enrolling, visit.

If you enroll in a part of term, or second 8 week class to earn full time status the Golden Promise Program will pay for all fees after the course census date (check your web schedule bill for specific census dates).
