World Language Immersion Program

Study and travel in Mexico and Spain --- Learn Spanish and earn GWC course credit!

GWC offers Spanish language courses in Spain at the ISLA (Instituto de Lenguas Aplicadas) and in Mexico at the KUKULCAN Spanish Language School. Each course is 2 to 8 weeks in length and students may begin on any Monday during any semester. The schools have two locations in Spain and one in Mexico. Students may study up to 16 weeks during the Spring or Fall semesters, up to 8 weeks during the Summer Intersession, and up to 4 weeks during the Winter Intersession, taking several courses back to back.

1. Am I eligible?

IEO offers two study options:

You are eligible for the language immersion program through individualized study (begins anytime) if you have completed 12 units at GWC with a grade of “C” or better.
You are eligible for the language immersion program through the regular semester online classes if you are at least 18 years of age or have a high school diploma.

2. What courses are offered ?

Elementary Spanish: SPA 180 (5 units), SPA 185 (5 units)
Intermediate Spanish: SPA 280 (4 units), SPA 285 (4 units)
Special Topics: SPA 199 (1 to 3 units) may be repeated
Spanish for Professionals: SPA 068 - Spanish for Medical Personnel (3 units)

3. Will I receive transferable credit?

YES! For each 3-week course in Spain or Mexico (25 hours per week), along with 15 hours of online activities, coordinated with your GWC instructor, you can earn up to 5 transferable semester units. Transferability varies from institution to institution. It is important to meet with a counselor at your college to understand how the units will transfer to your institution.

4. Where can I study?

You may study Spanish at one or more of the following locations:

SPAIN – Barcelona or Salamanca MEXICO – Cuernavaca

5. How much will it cost?

Golden West College Registration Fees:
Students taking Spanish classes through GWC will only pay GWC enrollment fees. (Check GWC Catalog)

Language School Registration Fees (tuition and lodging):

Airfare:
Students must arrange for airfare --- cost is not included in price of course. Roundtrip airfare varies but can be estimated at $850r/t for Spain and $450r/t or Mexico.
