Holiday Art Sale
If you believe attending an Art Sale is an activity best left to folks with last names like Trump, Gates, Vanderbilt or Hilton, you need to know that times are certainly changing. With just you in mind, the Golden West College Art Department is presenting their “Holiday Art Sale” to help you acquire distinctive pieces of art for your family and friends for the holidays.
On Tuesday, December 2 and Wednesday, December 3 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m, myriad pieces of art will be on sale in the Fine Arts Plaza on campus. All proceeds from the sale go to the Art Department’s Artists Lecture Fund and to benefit GWC’s art students. The Artists Lecture Fund is an important beneficiary of this sale as it allows students, faculty and the community to attend lectures where speakers from the art world present differing views on art.
Included in the sale will be ceramics (both functional and sculptural), sculptures, paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, silk screened images, photography, jewelry and digital arts images. Most of the pieces for sale are student works. To participate in this sale, students must be currently enrolled GWC art students and have created the pieces on campus in conjunction with their class work. Prices will range from $1.00 to several hundred, so finding a piece that can match your price range and artistic demands is completely possible.
Art Department Chair Amanda Best notes, “This is the third consecutive year of the Holiday Art Sale. Our goal is to highlight the diverse disciplines found in the study of art and each year; I believe we succeed. The Holiday Art Sale allows students to meet their fellow student artists and examine their work. The sheer variety of work presented is outstanding.
This year’s Holiday Art Sale is indeed noteworthy, as it will feature the work of deceased sculpture artist/student Jane Axel, a proud student at GWC until she was in her 90’s. To honor her, Jane Axel’s family has donated her art for the Holiday Art Sale with all proceeds contributing to an art scholarship for GWC art students in her name. Additionally, her family has ensured that a Pillar of Achievement was dedicated in her memory on the GWC campus this past October. “Jane was an incredible lady,” stated Cheryl Tittle, College Promotions and Arts & Letters. “She was a gifted, talented, elegant woman and artist whose style was much like Picasso.” GWC Art Department faculty members, many of whom are renowned artists outside of GWC as well as inspiring teachers on campus, also participate by donating demos or additional copies of their work.
Holiday Art Sale tip: Much like all holiday shopping, if you see what you like, buy it — it may not be there later!
