Learning Resource Center Building construction

GWC Learning Resource Center Project Update

By Janet Houlihan

You may have noticed on the west side of Golden West College a new construction site. This is the Learning Resource Center or LRC. The 55,251 sq./ft. LRC is the last building funded by the Measure C Bond. This impressive building, at 60 feet tall, will be the second tallest building on campus. In actuality, what appears to be a single tall building, is in reality two buildings on a single foundation system of caissons, grade beams and a structural slab. The tall portion is a three story, cast in place concrete structure that utilizes exposed concrete walls and columns and hidden beams. The concrete used is what is called type 3, which gives it the white appearance. Adjacent to this building is a one story steel framed building. This building uses a steel frame that metal studs are attached to. The metal studding is covered by an exterior drywall and then clad with a stainless steel panel skin. This stainless panel skin continues on the south side of three story building and on a few areas of the east and west. The north side of the building is all glass to afford a view of the California native garden. The new LRC will house the library; tutoring, writing, and computer centers; the new media, staff development and academic senate departments.

Mother Nature challenged the project a bit, creating some delay to the overall project’s schedule due date. Current ongoing activities include interior drywall, exterior metal siding, and glasswork as well as the various unseen piping, wiring and fixtures.
