Patrons/Chefs for Scholarships

GWC Volunteers are the Best!

by Margie Bunten

Over 60 supporters strong, the Patrons of Golden West College are extraordinary volunteers and fund raisers. Organized in April of 1973 as an auxiliary of the Foundation, the Patrons immediately began fund raising for student scholarships. They began with a membership of 18 women, some of whom are still active today. The first President, Penny Loomer, was a founding student when the campus opened in 1966. In the course of these 37 years they have raised over $100,000 in scholarships. They have four endowed scholarships that are given annually as well as funding 12 high school scholarships. When they are not fundraising, these volunteers support the Art Gallery, Scholarship and Awards Ceremony, and Graduation. During the academic year they meet each month at the college for a luncheon and program.

For years, the Patrons fundraiser was a fabulous Fashion Show. Then, five years ago, they decided to switch to a family festival of food, fun and drinks. The Chefs for Scholarships event will be held on Sunday, September 19th. Over twenty local restaurants will be serving scrumptious dishes in the Student Center. Along with the food there is wine and beer tasting. Last year, guests enjoyed delicious food and beverages from BrewBakers, Coco’s Bakery Restaurant, Deli-licious, Don Ramon Mexican Restaurant, Fresca’s Mexican Grill, Heck Estates, Hot Dog on a Stick, Jersey Mike’s, Lazy Dog Café, Mangiamo Gelato Café, Market Broiler, McKenna’s On The Bay, PRP Wine International, RA Sushi, Smokin’ Mo’s, Sodexho, and STONEFIRE Grill. Our indoor/outdoor venue provides a comfortable setting to enjoy live music, dine, drink and bid on opportunity drawings and silent auction items. Bring the kids, we’ll have a video game limo, a clown, face painting, and of course, food.

Be sure to mark your calendars Sunday, September 19, 2010 and plan on supporting student scholarships at this deliciously fun event!
