7th Annual Regional Science Olympiad - Friday, March 18
Golden West College will host its 7th annual regional Science Olympiad tournament for Orange County middle and high school students on Friday, March 18, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
The tournament involves interscholastic, academic competitions, consisting of individual and team events. Students who participate in this tournament engage in year-round study and training preparations in chemistry, biology, earth science, physics, and technology.
Tournament qualifications require knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills, and science applications.
Scheduled tournament events are Bridge Building, Boomilever, Bottle Rockets, Egg Drop, Robot Ramble, and The Wright Stuff.
Event sites will be posted on buildings throughout the campus.
Students will be awarded ribbons, medals, and trophies for their achievements at the conclusion of the tournament.
Top-ranked middle and high schools will participate in the state science competition on Saturday, April 16 at Long Beach City College.
“The tournament’s primary goal is to increase awareness of science education and encourage enthusiasm that is normally related to varsity sports programs. Science competitions are encouraged on all levels academically and professionally because young students need to be encouraged to pursue careers in the sciences,” said Dr. Carol Grimes, event coordinator and chemistry professor.
