We will provide deionized water for any chemistry activities, but cannot guarantee that it is neutral in pH. Please come prepared for this eventuality.
National rules require Aprons or lab coats that cover the knee, pants of skirts that cover the legs to the ankles, closed-toed shoes, OSHA approved chemical splash goggles with indirect vents, pants or skirts that cover the legs to the ankles, and a lab coat or apron that reaches below the knees. Students who do not meet these guidelines may not be permitted to compete. Any loan of equipment by our stockroom will incur a substantial point penalty.
Please see http://www.soinc.org for information about the type of safety goggles/glasses required for each type of lab/testing event. We will try to have approved eye protection available on loan, but a point penalty will be assessed if you do not bring your own correct eyewear.
NO cell phones are permitted in the competition venues. This includes the gym for Wright Stuff competitions, where it is against the rules to get coaching via phone call or text message. Students should leave their cell phones with their coach or adult chaperone. Having a cell phone on your person during an exam is grounds for disqualification from the event.
NO photography is allowed in any of the contests, even by parents of participants. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. The press and college public relations department are the only exceptions to this rule.
Please see the schedule for events that require impounding of student-built entries. The regional competition requires impounding for some events for which the national rules do not specify impounding in order to facilitate examination of the entries before the competition begins. See the Schedule of events for the list of events requiring impounds. Impounding must be completed by 9:10 am on the day of the event.
