OPTICAL SERVICES AND REFERRALS
The Eyeglass Rule
The law requires eye doctors to make available to their patients, the eyeglass
prescriptions, except for contact lenses, at no extra cost (you don't have to buy them
from the doctor who gave you the exam). With your prescription in hand, you can
shop for your eyeglasses, looking for the best quality at the best price, just as you
would for any other product.
Eye Professionals
Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MD or DO). They are eye specialists. They
can prescribe medications and can perform surgery. The may provide eyewear too.
Optometrists are not medical doctors, but they have a doctor of optometry degree
(OD). They have training in detecting eye diseases, but they can't treat you. They can
examine eyes, prescribe, and sell eyewear.
Opticians fill prescriptions for eyewear. They cannot examine eyes or prescribe lenses.
