Fight Against Racism

Dear Students and Colleagues,

Over the past few weeks, we have seen disturbing evidence of continuing violence, threats and racism against the Asian and the Asian American community across the country. This unprecedented rise in violence against members of that community has shocked and saddened our Golden West College family.

The Washington Post reports that this latest string of assaults comes a year after the coronavirus hit the U.S. and Asian Americans were targeted by xenophobic and racist attacks fueled by political rhetoric from those who called COVID-19 the “China virus” and “kung flu.”

In just an eight-week period between March and May 2020, the United Nations reported more than 1,800 racist incidents against Asian Americans.

Golden West College condemns all acts of violence against our community members. And we must not only condemn, but continue the equity work in which the college has engaged.

My thoughts are with the most fragile among us—the elderly—who are often targeted in these attacks. Moreover, my heart goes out to GWC students, faculty and staff who are impacted by the ongoing undercurrent of threat.

Please know that the Student Health Center can provide mental health services for students, and the Employee Assistance Program can assist our faculty and staff. Please report any and all incidents to our Dean of Students, Dr. Carla Martinez, here.

In these most challenging times, it’s more important than ever that we take care of ourselves and each other.

Sincerely,

Tim McGrath
