COMPUTER BUSINESS APPLICATIONS

Office Administration’s Computer Business Applications (CBA) department teaches a full range of state-of-the-art technology application courses from Introduction to Computers to intermediate/advanced skill levels of Microsoft Office. These hands-on courses, along with other computer technology courses and fundamental business skill courses, promote technology proficiency, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Courses offered through CBA prepare students to succeed in any type of public, private, governmental, educational, health, manufacturing, and industrial employment environment that use state-of-the-art computer technology.

Program Highlights

  • The CBA program utilizes Microsoft Certified Application Specialist Approved Courseware so that students can take and achieve national certification at the Core and Expert levels upon completion of the required CBA courses.
  • Golden West College is a member of the Microsoft IT Academy and the department uses the curriculum to further reinforce those skills for students to acquire the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist (MCAS) certification.
  • The Program offers certification for the Certified Business Professional bringing recognition to Golden West College as one of a few international testing sites in the State of California that offer the International Association of Administrative Professional Certified Professional Secretary and the Certified Administrative Professional Exams.

Graduates have the ability to provide office support and work with word processing programs, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, databases and graphics. Job titles include:

  • Administrative secretary
  • Office manager
  • Management trainee
  • Sales representative
  • Spreadsheet technician

Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that administrative assistants would see a 12% growth in job openings between 2012 and 2022. The median annual wages for administrative assistants and secretaries, except legal, medical and executive, were $33,240 in May 2014. The largest employer of administrative assistants was elementary and secondary schools. The top paying industry was the postal service in 2012.

Continuing Education Information

Graduates of an associate’s degree program in business computer applications may wish to further their training by enrolling in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program. Some bachelor’s degree programs qualify individuals to earn the National Security Administration 4012 Security Certification and pursue management roles.

With a solid foundation in Microsoft Windows and Office as well as strong digital and web literacy skills, the Business Information Worker brings efficiency and productivity to the workplace.

Completion of the Business Information Worker pathway also brings indispensable critical thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal skills to the workplace, essential components of the curriculum.
