Golden Promise Program - FAQS

Q: Who is eligible for the Golden Promise Program?

  1. Students who meet the following criteria are eligible for Golden Promise Program:
  • First-time college students
          - Has not attended GWC or any other institution as a college student and is not eligible for normal financial aid.
  • Returning Golden Promise recipients
    2nd year program students who meet the same eligibility criteria.
  • Full-time students who are receiving the fee waiver, but not receiving grants
    Must meet the eligibility criteria.

Eligibility Criteria:

Q: If I attended Golden West College during a Summer session as a first-time student, am I eligible for Golden Promise Program for the Fall semester?

  1. Yes, as long as you meet all of the eligibility criteria and the Summer semester was your first semester of enrollment.

Q: Will I be eligible if I am not a U.S. Citizen?

  1. All GWC students who meet the program criteria and meet California or AB540 residency requirements are eligible for the program.

Q: I'm receiving the Golden Promise Program, but I already paid for my tuition; will I receive a refund?

  1. For qualifying students who have already paid their tuition, a refund will apply to their account during the after the census date for the term. 

Q: What costs are covered by the Golden Promise Program?

  1. This program will cover up to two years of enrollment fees for 12 or more units ($46/unit), per semester, as well a textbook stipend. In addition, it covers your Health Fee ($20), College Service Charge ($17), and materials fees (if applicable), as long as funds last.

Q: Do other scholarships and financial aid affect whether or not I receive free tuition?

  1. If you receive a California College Promise Grant (formerly BOG Fee Waiver) or any other free tuition program, then your enrollment fees will be paid through that grant or program. The Golden Promise Program is an initiative designed to cover tuition for eligible students who are enrolled in 12+ units who do not qualify for the California College Promise Grant (formerly BOG Fee Waiver) or any other grants.

    GWC scholarships are awarded to students outside of federal or state financial aid will not affect the receipt of Golden Promise Program. 

Q: Does the Golden Promise also cover summer school?

  1. No, the Golden Promise Program is not offered during the summer session.

Q: How do I enroll as a full-time student at Golden West College?

  1. The first step is to apply as a college student. After your application has been processed, complete the online orientation on MyGWC and make an appointment to meet with a Counselor to plan your semester. Do not forget to apply for Financial Aid.

    If you enroll in part of a term, or second 8 week class to earn full time status the Golden Promise Program will pay for all fees after the course census date (check your web schedule bill for specific census dates).
