Meet Our Team
The Office of Student Life and Leadership assists students and staff with planning co-curricular campus activities and provides information related to policies and procedures of Golden West College. We facilitate student government and clubs, oversee the daily operation of the Student Center and Game Room, and provide a variety of services to students and staff.
Frank A. Cirioni serves as the Director of Student Life and Leadership Development. Frank is a student affairs professional with ten years of practical experience in residential life and housing, student conduct, and social justice education. Originally from White Plains, NY, Frank earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Arts Education from New York Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts degree in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University. Frank recently served as the Director of Student Conduct at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. His previous roles were held at EF Education First, Barnard College, The Ohio State University, Oberlin College, and Emory University. In his free time, Frank enjoys live music, theater, reading, classic cars, and motorcycling.
Mary Avalos is the Student Leadership Coordinator and Advisor to Student Government. She has been with Golden West College since 2004 and with the Coast Community College since 1998. Mary is a Coastline Community College alumna before transferring to California State University, Long Beach where she earned a Bachelor in Science in Vocational Education and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
Therese Grande has over a decade of experience working in higher education. A Southern California native, Therese earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from New York University, where she then spent the next six years as a student affairs staff member; first as a Residence Hall Director and then as the Program Coordinator for NYU’s Faculty-In-Residence and Living-Learning Communities. Therese joined the Coast Community College District in March of 2013 working in the President’s Office at Orange Coast College and most recently served as the Curriculum Staff Specialist at OCC. Therese is entering the Master of Public Administration program at CSU Long Beach this fall and is an active member of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges. Outside of work, you can find Therese playing weekly trivia nights, training for her next half-marathon, or road-tripping with her husband, Chris, and their rescue dog, Copperfield.
Dennis Nañez, Office of Student Life and Leadership Staff Assistant, has been an employee at Golden West College since 2005. Dennis enjoys playing sports such as baseball and basketball, and he enjoys watching his favorite sports team, the La Dodgers. Dennis and his wife are the proud parents of a baby girl, Leilani Samantha! He is working toward earning his degree in Business at Cal State Fullerton, and is a proud alum of Golden West College—he earned his A.A. in Business Administration in 2007. If you have questions regarding campus events, clubs, or student leadership, Dennis is glad to help.
Carlo Tomàs serves as the Student Center Custodian for the Office of Student Life & Leadership. Carlo has been part of the Student Life & Leadership team since 2010. Carlo is the type of employee who is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs him. He can often be found keeping the Student Center in tip-top shape and helping to make sure that events on campus run smoothly. Carlo’s interests include spending time with family and friends, outdoor activities such as grilling and sports, art, and music. Carlo enjoys working at Golden West College and keeping the campus safe and clean for our students.
