GWC NextUp/Guardian Scholars students



What is NextUp?

NextUp (also known as Cooperating Agencies Foster Youth Educational Support Program, CAFYES) is a supplemental program of the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) program. NextUp is designed to assist current or former foster youth whose dependency was established or continued by the court on or after a student’s 16th birthday. The program assists qualified students balance their needs with financial assistance and additional support services.


NextUp Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a residence of California or eligible for non-resident tuition waiver which include Dream Act, T or U Visa
  • Qualify to receive a California College Promise Grant
  • Be enrolled in at least 9 units at the time of acceptance to the program (Exception: verified DSPS student)
  • Have dependency established or continued by the court on or after student’s 16th birthday
  • Be younger than 26 years of age at the beginning of the academic year


NextUp Support Services

  • Academic, career, and personal counseling
  • Additional textbook services provided
  • Associated Student Body fee paid
  • Educational supply voucher
  • Material and health fees paid
  • Monthly gas cards or bus passes
  • Monthly grocery cards (if not receiving CalFresh)
  • Referrals for housing, transportation, and clothing
  • Snack/hygiene pantry
  • Unmet Need Grants


NextUp Student Participation Opportunities

  • Assistance filling out the FAFSA and/or Chafee application
  • Campus and community referrals
  • Conferences
  • Educational workshops
  • EOPS/CARE/Guardian Scholars club

  • Volunteer opportunities



Student Commitment to NextUp

Once students have been accepted into the NextUp program, their commitment to the program includes:

  • Attend four (4) EOPS/NextUp counseling appointments each semester (Fall & Spring)
  • Attend two (2) activities/workshops each semester (Fall & Spring)
  • Complete a Student NextUp Mutual Responsibility Contract annually
  • Enroll in a minimum of 9 units (Exception: DSPS students and/or as determined by EOPS program counselor)
  • Meet twice with the NextUp/Guardian Scholars Specialist each semester
