Huntington Beach, Calif. — Golden West College chemistry professor Kate Green has been named a 2027 Orange County Teacher of the Year by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE). Green is one of six educators selected for the prestigious recognition and is the second Golden West College faculty member in the past three years to receive the distinction.
OCDE representatives, including Superintendent Stefan Bean, arrived at GWC on April 28 to surprise Green with the award. They were joined by College and District leaders, GWC colleagues, students, loved ones, and members of the OCDE “prize patrol” as Green was presented with an OC Teacher of the Year award and a $25,000 check courtesy of the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation.
A dedicated educator at GWC for 19 years, Green is known for her energetic and practice-based approach to teaching chemistry. She views learning science much like learning a sport or musical instrument — something developed through repetition, encouragement, and persistence rather than innate talent alone.
“Chemistry is not a talent test; it is something that can be learned through practice,” Green said. “I see myself as a coach. Chemistry requires ‘reps’ to build the cognitive muscle necessary to solve complex problems. I provide the structure and the drills — and as a former cheerleader, I provide the enthusiasm too.”
Green said one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is helping students discover confidence in themselves and their abilities. “A student once asked me, ‘Why do you do this?’ and I responded, ‘Because you never know when you will change someone’s life,’” Green said. “A good teacher can create a ripple effect by introducing new ideas and fostering personal growth. Education should transform more than knowledge — it should transform identity.”
Outside the classroom, Green hopes students leave with a deeper appreciation for chemistry’s role in everyday life and an openness to discovering unexpected passions.
“I share with students that I actually started college as an art major,” Green said. “I discovered chemistry because I had to take a science class, and I became fascinated by the chemistry of pigments and color. I want students to realize that trying something new can completely change the direction of your life.”
On Nov. 1, Green will join the other Orange County Teacher of the Year honorees at a gala at the Disneyland Hotel, where they will be formally recognized. As part of the honor, she will also have the opportunity to apply for the California Teachers of the Year program.
“Professor Green’s passion for teaching is evident in every interaction she has with students,” said GWC President Meridith Randall. “She creates a learning environment rooted in encouragement, discipline, and genuine care for student success. This recognition is incredibly well deserved.”
