Huntington Beach, Calif. — Golden West College (GWC) has been selected as one of only two community colleges in California to participate in the Community of Practice program hosted by the California Alliance for Student Parent Success. GWC joins a cohort of California State Universities (CSUs) and University of California (UC) campuses committed to strengthening resources and support for student parents.
The Community of Practice brings together a network of higher education leaders from across the state to share research, strategies, and innovative solutions that improve outcomes for students who are balancing college, work, and parenting responsibilities. Golden West College’s team — made up of faculty, student services leaders and administrators — will begin its work in collaboration with the Alliance this month.
“We are honored to be selected as one of only two California community colleges to join this effort,” said Dr. Carla Martinez, Dean of Students & Library at GWC. “Student parents are an essential part of our college community, and this initiative allows us to build on our commitment to providing the resources and support they need to succeed.”
As part of this commitment, the GWC Library is currently transforming one of its rooms into a new family-friendly study space. This dedicated area will ensure parenting students no longer have to choose between studying on campus or being with their children. The space will serve as both a quiet study environment for student parents and a kid-friendly area stocked with children’s books, games, and toys.
The California Alliance for Student Parent Success is a statewide group focused on creating better opportunities and resources for student parents. By joining the Community of Practice, GWC will collaborate with other institutions to strengthen academic pathways, provide targeted student services, and expand access to resources that make it easier for student parents to succeed.
